Giving Clear Direction to Friends Who Are Acting for the First Time
Friends who have never acted before can shine when your directions are kind, simple and specific.
Start with the feeling. Before you say a single line, tell your actors what the scene is about. Is the character nervous, proud, or secretly sad? A first-time actor who understands the feeling will usually find the right face and voice without being told how.
Give one note at a time. If you rattle off a long list of fixes, everyone freezes. Pick the most important thing, ask for it, and film again. Then move to the next. Short, calm notes feel like help instead of criticism.
Say what you want, not what you do not want. "Don't look so stiff" leaves a person feeling worse and still confused. Try "Imagine you just heard good news and you're trying not to smile." Pictures and small stories work better than technical words.
Show it when words fail. If an actor is stuck, walk through the moment yourself. You don't need to be a good performer. You are only sharing an idea, and a friend can then make it their own.
Let them play first. Run the scene once or twice with no pressure. Often the best moments are the loose, natural ones before anyone is trying hard. Keep the camera rolling and listen for what feels true.
Thank people often. Your friends are giving you their time and their courage. Say what worked, even if it is small: "I loved how you looked out the window there." Praise that is specific helps people repeat the good parts.
Take breaks and keep it fun. Tired, hungry actors get tense. Share a snack, laugh together, and stretch between takes. A relaxed set makes a relaxed performance, and that is what the audience will feel.
